One of the things I like are bug eating plants. What all carniverous plants have in common is that they needed to supliment thier diet with insects because they grow in nutrient poor environments. Venus Flytraps are particularly cool becuase of thier fast movement and amazing trap. It is a hydrostatic trap that uses water pressure to snap shut. The trigger for this is not one but two activations of the small hairs that potrude from the interior faces of the trap. The dual trigger requirement is because it is very energy intensive to reset the trap so the plant wants to avoid false alarms from raindrops or other non-insect stimulus. Next time you are on broadway come down to the shop and see the whole selection of bug eating plants and thier different trapping mechanisms.

@pacoutgreenteam and @e.c.o._eureka are throwing a trash bash at 9am this Saturday, June 1st. They make it real easy to do good deeds. All you have to do is show up at the Del Norte St. Pier near the dog park. If you come early there are usually some treats donated by @los_bagels.
Here are some pics from our last neighborhood bash two months ago. It was a beautiful morning and we got a huge amount of rubbish cleaned out of the wetlands and along the waterfront trail. See ya'll tomorrow!

One of the best things about healthy relationships with dogs is that they push you get outside more. Often it feels like a chore to go on that walk but the whole pack is always happier afterward, including me. Somewhere on the socials I saw someone say that if a dog's year is seven of our years, then a day is a week and a few hours is an entire day. That give me even a little more motivation to make every day count.

Continuing to practice this new 3D gif technique I decided to share a very beautiful meteorite that I have been keeping on my desk. I am thinking about selling this one, and have had some offers, but as far as meteorites go it is considered a real stunner. It weighs 805g and is about fist size. It is an amazing handful of space.
If you are new to the whole idea of owning a meteorite they are "shooting stars" that have anough mass to survive the fiery entrance through the atmosphere. Usually the mass explodes during this phase releases tremendous amounts of energy. Then fragments of the meteorite with a blackend fusion crust rain down onto the Earth's surface. The ones we find are sometimes witnessed and collected within days of being in space, and some are found after 10's of thousands of years here on the planet. Eventually they weather away and form new as a terrestrial stone if enough time passes.
We do sell some meteorites at the shop. We have some Lunar, an Iron called Gebel Kamil (which is the core of a planetesimal that no longer exists due to a shattering impact), and a beautiful representative of the asteroid belt named HaH 346, or Ghadamis in the trade. It is totally cool if you just want to come check them out too. I spent days staring at them in museums when I was younger. Now you can come to the shop and hold an actualy laboratory certified piece of the moon!

Having fun learning some new photoshop tutorials I decided to use this new "BeLeaf You're Worth It" bath bomb that Jennifer recently made. I thought the sparkly gold salts embedded in the deep forest green Monstera leaf would look good againsy the sunlit mint in the garden behind our shop. I ran a tester with one of these and it was a certified banger. The water turned a deep green like an enchanted emerald pool and the cucumber, honey, oakmoss and sandlewood scent combined into something new. Thinking about it, the smell also said enchanted forest. Like right after a rain. Anyway, I hope you dig the technique and the bath bombs are available at the shop.

I have so much stuff that I like going on that the to-do list only gets bigger, not smaller. One of my tasks was to check the carnivorous plant bog gardens at the shop for mosquitoes. In an old aquarium garden I was delighted to find this crew of youngins instead.
These are Pacific Tree Frog tadpoles. I learned quite a bit about them researching for this post that I didn't know such as they are primarily herbivores eating plankton and organic detritus as you can see in the videos. They also have enclosed gills. The rapid transformation into a frog is guided by their thyroid. The very long intestine needed to process plants shortens while preparing for an insect based diet. Their cartilaginous skulls change into bone. I also learned that the mouth undergoes a similarly radical transformation as it changes from a plant grinding structure to the surprise tongue based attacks of the mature frog.
The sunlight was just right to capture the radiance throughout the body that I have only seen in the adult frog's eyes. I came back to do a 2nd round of photos after not being satisfied with the first and that is when I noticed the entire troupe of mature frogs also living among the pitcher plants. They felt left out of the photoshoot so we focused on them for a while too.
